Why is sleep so important for our health?

Sleep is important  for memory functioning. In order to have optimum mental functioning and alertness throughout the day you need to have adequate sleep time.  Chronic sleep deprivation can cause weight gain by altering levels of hormones.  If you don’t have adequate sleep time it causes mood swings, irritability, inability to focus.  Sleep is important for optimum health, especially the heart and and immune system. Excessive sleepiness can cause accidents, mistakes in your work place, and it also affects your immune functioning.  A decrease in immune functioning can cause an increased risk of cancer and infections.
